I recently had a conversation with a client who was wrestling with feelings of depression, tiredness, and the daunting nature of pursuing his dreams. He felt trapped in the corporate grind, weighed down by the responsibilities of full-time work. As we talked, he expressed a desire to break free and build his own business, but the sheer enormity of it all left him feeling drained.

I offered a perspective that shifted the energy in the room: instead of fixating on the big vision—those massive, ambitious goals—what if he just focused on one tiny step he could take over the next three months?

Imagine this: instead of trying to reach out to a vast network of potential clients or crafting a lengthy business plan, he could direct his energy toward just one potential client. By narrowing his focus to something so manageable, it would almost feel silly not to pursue it. Keeping his corporate job would provide a safety net, allowing him to explore this small goal without the pressure of immediate success.

As we wrapped up our conversation, I could see the weight lift off his shoulders. He felt lighter, as if a new path had opened up.

This experience got me thinking: many of us are caught in a cycle of emotional heaviness and fatigue, feeling paralysed by the enormity of our aspirations— It’s time to shift that narrative.

Here’s how you can start your journey:

  1. Start Small: Identify a manageable goal that excites you.
    What is the smallest but most impactful goal (that excites you) you could write down now that would feel like manageable action toward your bigger desire/goal?


  2. Create a Clear Timeframe: Write down when you want to accomplish this task by.
    What specific date will you set to have this goal completed? Be sure to write it down in your planner or set a reminder on your phone.


  3. Identify Your Steps: Scribble down every single tiny step that this involves, as small as you can, and then write these down neatly in your planner.
    What are the smallest, most manageable actions you need to take? List them all now, even if they seem triviaL.


  4. Assign Each Step: Assign each step (or collection of steps) to specific days or weeks.
    What day this week can you start your first step? Break down the tasks and add them to your calendar, so you know exactly when to tackle them.


  5. Set a Reward and Get Excited: What reward can you schedule for yourself on or after the final date of doing this?
    Could you book a football game, a spa day, a trip, or even just a nice restaurant? Set something up that excites you to celebrate when you complete your goal.


By breaking your goals into manageable actions, you're already on your way to overcoming the emotional heaviness that’s been holding you back. These steps may seem small, but with consistency and focus, they’ll create the momentum you need to achieve your bigger visions.
